Their recklessness will cost them dearly. Fines are on the way for the two tourists who yesterday, intending to photograph flamingos, ventured into the restricted area of the Molentargius salt flats, on Viale Colombo in Quartu, sinking into the mud. This reckless act forced firefighters to conduct an emergency response, supported by local police and 118 ambulances. This use of force could have been avoided if the restrictions had been respected, and the Forestry Department will now issue fines.

As the Park Authority states, "we are only waiting for the local police report before proceeding." Park director Marianna Mossa also stated: "Respecting the restrictions is also essential for public safety. The basins are not accessible or passable: the surface of the sediment may appear stable, but it hides extremely treacherous conditions, and the risk of sinking can arise suddenly."

The two tourists, apparently Romans from the initial investigation, continued to wade through the salt flats despite having begun to sink, until the mud reached waist-high, preventing them from moving. This prompted passersby to raise the alarm. Firefighters had to reposition the overturned ladders to reach them. Once rescued, they then returned independently to the hotel where they were staying.
