In less than a month, 1,512 first doses have been administered free of charge in the two population groups at greatest risk: young people aged 11 to 25 and workers with high contact with the public, such as school staff and office and commercial workers. The vaccination campaign against meningococcus B launched by the Prevention Department of ASL 5 of Oristano on 13 March continues.
The first doses will have to be followed by boosters two months later. The vaccination campaign was started by the ASL following the discovery of a case of meningitis from meningococcus type B in an eighteen-year-old from Ghilarza, a pathology that had caused his death . In addition to the timely start of prophylaxis for people who had come into contact with the young man, the company's Prevention department had also arranged to further extend protection for the population, offering the youngest and most exposed workers free administration of the vaccine.
" The response from citizens to our appeal has been high ," explained the director of the Prevention Department, Maria Valentina Marras. "Now we are continuing with the campaign: all citizens who wish to be vaccinated can only do so by making a reservation, by sending an email to vaccinazioni@asloristano.it or by going to the Public Health clinics to make an appointment. The emergency is over, since in the ten days following the detection of the meningitis case, we have not detected any other cases, but we cannot rule out that the bacterium is continuing to circulate, even in an asymptomatic form ."
