An autopsy will be performed on Friday, March 3, on Mario Siffu, a 32-year-old man from Porto Torres who died on Tuesday, March 24, following a life-threatening operation at the Santissima Annunziata Hospital in Sassari. The Sassari Public Prosecutor's Office, through Public Prosecutor Paolo Piras, has authorized the autopsy on the young man, who was released from prison on March 26 after serving his sentence.
The prosecutor granted the request of the 32-year-old's parents, Cinzia and Giuseppe, appointing an expert to perform an autopsy. Through their lawyer, Giuseppe Onorato, the family filed a complaint with the Sassari Prosecutor's Office to determine whether their son underwent any clinical and diagnostic tests during his illness to better understand his health. In recent days, the NAS (Anti-Adulteration and Health Unit) of the Carabinieri (Italian Army) began an investigation, which also interviewed the family members to understand the incident and determine any liability.
Mario Siffu had been complaining of severe abdominal pain for several months, which he reported to his family. On Monday, March 23, his situation worsened, and the 32-year-old was transferred from Bancali prison to the emergency room in Sassari, where he was admitted as an emergency and underwent surgery the following night. At 3:00 a.m., he entered the operating room, where doctors attempted to save his life. He was subsequently transferred to the intensive care unit of the civil hospital, where he died on Tuesday the 24th without his parents being able to see him for the last time. "We were only called in the morning at 9:30 a.m., and by 3:00 p.m., he was already dead," his father stated.
