Initial investigations into the bodies of Teresa Vacca and her son Marco Durzu , a mother and son found dead in their home in Maracalagonis , have led to an initial hypothesis: the cause of death for both was asphyxiation , meaning death was caused by oxygen deprivation or respiratory arrest . Deaths could therefore have been caused by food (or medication) ingested by the mother and son in the hours preceding their deaths.

Initially , it was thought that two illnesses occurred, one after the other . The actual cause will be determined by coroner Roberto Demontis through the post-mortem examination and, above all, the toxicological and histological tests scheduled between tomorrow and Sunday at the Brotzu Institute of Forensic Medicine. These tests will allow investigators and magistrates to follow a predictable lead.

In the home of Teresa Vacca – 82 years old – and her son Marco Durzu – 58 – no traces of blood or signs of a struggle were found , nor was forced entry to the house detected.

Mother and son lived alone: the man had been bedridden for some time, while the woman, who in turn had constant contact with a brother, looked after him.
