A mother and her disabled son were found dead in their home. No signs of violence or forced entry. But one disturbing detail: both may have died of asphyxiation . A true mystery, in short, was the one investigators faced when they arrived yesterday on Via San Giovanni in Maracalagonis.
The body of Teresa Vacca, 82, was found in the hallway of her home . Beside her, on the floor, was a plate with several slices of mortadella. A few meters away, in a bedroom, was the body of her son, Marco Durzu, 58, lying in bed, unable to get out of bed due to a car accident many years ago that left him a quadriplegic. The tragedy was discovered by a couple who entered the home after noon yesterday with their daily groceries.
Everything points to death by asphyxiation, as hypothesized by coroner Roberto Demontis after an initial inspection of the bodies . But for now, this is just a hypothesis: autopsies will be needed to clarify the mystery.
