"Self-defense." This is how Giovanni Maninchedda justified the shooting of Luca Silanos in Sassari on January 19th during a preliminary hearing in Bancali prison yesterday. A 9mm pistol shot fired at the used car dealership on Strada 23 in Predda Niedda , in reaction to the other man's entrance.
" I repeatedly warned him not to come any closer ," Maninchedda told investigating judge Gian Paolo Piana. Then, according to the suspect, he reacted with a gun, aiming for Silanos's legs. The bullet struck Silanos's femur, and he underwent surgery to repair the injury. But what would have justified the man's arrival at the salon managed by Maninchedda? According to the suspect, it was a serious threat uttered against the man from Sassari by Silanos himself the previous evening at the checkout counter of a city supermarket.
After the shooting, Maninchedda fled the scene and, upon learning of the precautionary measure, decided to turn himself in to the Carabinieri on Monday, February 2nd, accompanied by his lawyers Luigi Esposito and Maria Assunta Argiolas. Meanwhile, on February 11th, the Court of Review will consider a less severe sentence for Giovanni Maninchedda.
