It was the Genoa Security Room of Poste Italiane that intercepted in real time the attempted assault on the Postamat at the Mamoiada post office , triggering the alarm and sending the criminals fleeing.
The incident occurred around 2:55 a.m. at Piazza Europa 15, when security systems detected an attempted tampering with the ATM. The 24-hour control room spotted two people attempting to force their way into the ATM . The response was immediate: a voice-activated siren was activated and law enforcement was alerted. The swift intervention forced the bandits to desist and flee, without being able to complete the theft.
At the same time , security procedures were initiated, including requesting security and deactivating the ATM . Upon arrival, the Carabinieri found that the machine was damaged but had not been detonated. The access area to the post office had been strewn with nails, likely to hinder the arrival of patrols. A subsequent inspection confirmed that the drawers containing the money were intact: no missing items, but damage to the structure.
Further checks are underway to quantify the damage , while the post office - Poste Italiane reports - should reopen regularly to the public, barring unforeseen events, on Tuesday 24 March .
Poste Italiane emphasizes how this incident demonstrates the effectiveness of its security investments: its offices in the province of Nuoro have been equipped with advanced cash protection systems, timed safes, rollercash devices, and burglar-proof solutions such as the so-called "guillotine," which prevents the introduction of explosives into ATMs. These systems are complemented by armed security services and a network of over 650 cameras with predictive video analytics software, capable of identifying suspicious behavior and triggering real-time law enforcement intervention, helping to reduce the number of attacks on ATMs over the years.
