The former Conti Vecchi di Macchiareddu road will soon become an alternative to the state road 195 : the works that will revolutionize the viability of the industrial area on the outskirts of Cagliari will be completed before the end of the year .

The work, commissioned to Cacip by the regional councilorship of public works, and financed with 12 million euros, will make it possible to widen the old route that overlooks the salt pans, thus quickly connecting the provincial road 92 with the junction of the Canal port on State Road 195.

The works began on January 16, and were interrupted in recent days in compliance with the environmental requirements related to the nesting period of the birds present in the wetlands of Macchiareddu. The construction site will reopen its doors on 1 September.

"The main part of the interventions has been authorized, where possible the carriageway of the former Conti Vecchi will be widened up to 6 meters, but for most of the track the width will be 5.50, however sufficient for the passage of heavy vehicles - he explains the engineer Vasco Ciuti, head of the technical office of the Cacip - Before the interruption of the works, the positioning of the stabilized mixed material, which forms the bottom of the road, began: when the works resumed, we will complete this operation along the entire route and then proceed with the bituminization».

"The works also include a 7 km long cycle path and made with a material that captures sunlight during the day and lights up at night, which will allow cycling enthusiasts to admire the birdlife present in the Macchiareddu oasis - he continues Ciuti -, nothing was left to chance during the road improvement works, which will be paved using a photocatalytic and sound-absorbing bitumen, in fact underpasses were also built to allow the transit of frogs and lizards. Once the works have been completed, the former Conti Vecchi will allow heavy vehicles to avoid traveling along the Pedemontana road to reach Macchiareddu, but above all it will become a fundamental outlet in the event of problems in the industrial area of Sarroch or storm surges along state road 195 ».
