Ninety-seven people were stranded at the port of Olbia on October 13th, after 94 and 92 the previous days . The stalemate has continued for over 40 days: arrivals continue, but embarkations do not. Giorgia Meloni and Matteo Piantedosi have made security the hallmark of their government. In Olbia, faced with a situation that has been known for weeks, they have been unable to find a solution. This is the reality, beyond the propaganda.
Silvio Lai, MP and secretary of the Sardinian Democratic Party, stated: "I have prepared," the Democratic Party member added, "a parliamentary question to Minister Piantedosi. I will request updated data on the number of migrants and their capacity at Monastir, the reasons for the denied embarkations and the document verification procedures, the conditions of assistance to stranded people, and the Border Police staffing. Meloni and Piantedosi will also have to answer to Parliament for an issue the government can no longer ignore."
The companies cite documentation problems and navigation safety. The Italian Maritime Safety Authority (SIULP) reports staff shortages and inadequate procedures.
A criticality that has been known for weeks, Lai argues, "explodes in front of passengers and falls on migrants, officials, and the city of Olbia. Monday's incident, with around thirty people entering the boarding area and then being removed by police, is a very serious sign. We can't wait for tensions to rise or for someone to get hurt before admitting that the system isn't working. And we can't order someone to leave the area without addressing the concrete issue of departure." The alternative, concludes the Democratic Party secretary, "is brutal: either Meloni and Piantedosi are incapable of managing the emergency, or there's a strategy of tension and they're allowing disorder and fear to grow because this fuels their propaganda. If not, they should demonstrate it with facts and not with another slogan or another hasty decree, because, after four years of talk, the political responsibility for this failure lies solely with them."
