" I was on the phone with him when I heard a heart-rending scream and then a death rattle ." This is how she reconstructed in court, before the judges of the Assize Court of Sassari , the last moments of her partner's life. Anna Maria Cudoni, partner of Giovanni Fresi , the 58-year-old goldsmith beaten to death by his son Michele on the night of December 27, 2023 in an alley in the historic center of Arzachena , gave her testimony in court, where the murder trial against 28-year-old Michele Fresi is taking place.

The woman, a civil party with the lawyer Massimo Schirò, retraced the ten years of bond that united her to the craftsman , who had Michele from a previous relationship, until the day of the crime. On the night of December 27th of a year ago, Anna Maria Cudoni and Giovanni Fresi were at home when a phone call on the man's cell phone alerted him that his son was acting up outside a club in Arzachena: he was in a state of strong alteration after having taken, by his own admission, a large quantity of narcotics , in particular LSD. The two carabinieri who intervened to stop him suffered several wounds and fractures, one of them even injuries with irreversible consequences. The father then went out and reached Michele, together they walked a few hundred meters to the 28-year-old's home. Here the goldsmith took his cell phone and called his partner, who witnessed the murder live on the telephone.

As explained by the lawyer Schirò, «Anna Maria Cudoni has joined the civil action because she wants justice to be done, to defend and protect Giovanni's memory. She is not doing it for money, in fact she is aware that the only assets the defendant has are part of the inheritance, and that with the conviction he will lose them. No other family member, moreover, has joined the civil action: the victim's sister, Amalia, is present but as an injured party». The victim, the lawyer underlined, «has raised his son alone all his life and has taken care of him, following him through his many troubles, including legal ones, always staying close to him. He and Anna Maria have been together since 2014: ten years of life together. Now my client is asking and demanding justice for the memory of her partner killed by the senseless action of his son».

The court will return on January 21, 2025 to hear some eyewitnesses of the evening preceding the murder, and Michele Fresi's then girlfriend, Sofia Maria Vasiliu. She also joined the civil action because she was repeatedly hit in the face and beaten by the defendant.
