Ogliastra is once again at the center of a story of solidarity and altruism . The liver removed from a man who died on June 17 at the Nostra Signora della Mercede hospital in Lanusei was successfully transplanted into a 63-year-old woman at the Brotzu hospital in Cagliari .
A story whose main protagonist was the family of the eighty-three-year-old from Ogliastra who, just over two weeks ago, had no doubts about giving the green light to the donation, giving a great example of generosity. The contribution of the multidisciplinary team of the Lanusei hospital was also fundamental, composed of the surgeon Gian Pietro Gusai and a team of anesthetists, instrumentalists and anesthesia nurses, who excellently supported the surgical team directed by Dr. Fausto Zamboni and arrived from Brotzu hospital in Cagliari.
«It was very important for the success of this delicate operation
the support received from the corporate managements of the ASL of Sassari and the ASL of Nuoro who made their professionals available – underlines Andrea Marras , general director of the ASL Ogliastra – particular thanks go to Dr. Gianluca Deiana of the ASL of Sassari and to Dr. Silvia Serusi of the ASL of Nuoro".
«When an organ is removed, the entire organizational machinery of the hospital is involved, from the healthcare personnel to those who have technical and logistical tasks - explains Luigi Ferrai , director of the Nostra Signora della Mercede hospital in Lanusei - a job that it kept us busy for 18 hours continuously : for this I want to thank all those who worked in various capacities on this operation. Without their contribution it would not have been possible to achieve a successful outcome." «In any case, the greatest thanks – adds Ferrai – must be given to the family of the man who showed great sensitivity, giving consent for the family member's organ to be made available to a person who needed it».
Francesco Loddo , director of the complex Anesthesia and Resuscitation structure, highlights the importance of raising awareness on the topic of donation . «This family has given a great example of human and social value – he observes – these gestures, together with the sharing of the successful outcome of the transplant, help to spread the culture of donation: we must ensure that an ever-increasing number of people undertake this initiative with conviction this choice."
The deceased man had been hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the NS della Mercede in very serious conditions . Subsequently, his clinical picture worsened further, leading to brain death . After the family's green light for organ donation, the surgical team from the Liver Transplant Center from the Brotzu hospital proceeded with the removal. The man's liver had been transported to Cagliari, to be transplanted into the woman who was waiting for the organ .
In the last hours the official happy ending: a perfectly successful operation and a life that can once again look to the future with hope .
