He had survived the violence that killed his girlfriend, Romina Meloni, who was fatally shot by her ex. But yesterday an illness left him no escape. Gabriele Fois, a 54-year-old from Nuoro, collapsed in front of the tobacconist's where he had gone to buy cigarettes. It happened in the courtyard in front of the Tabacchi Senatore shop in via Senatore Monni. Unfortunately, attempts to revive him by the 118 staff who arrived in a few minutes from the nearby San Francesco hospital were in vain.

The pain

The news of his passing went around Nuoro in a few hours, leaving the many people who knew him stunned. Gabriele Fois had actually started living peacefully again in recent years, after having lived through a tragedy that had seen him, against his will, as the protagonist and had touched him deeply.

The femicide

On March 31, 2019, Fois's girlfriend, Romina Meloni, then 49 years old, from Ozieri, was the victim of a femicide. Her ex-partner Ettore Sini, still detained and sentenced to 28 years in prison, forced his way into her home and shot her at point-blank range, killing her instantly. He then turned the gun on Gabriele Fois, shooting again and wounding him in the head. The killer walked away convinced he had killed two people, but Fois, after a few weeks in a coma, regained consciousness and began a long recovery process. Since then, with difficulty, he had resumed a normal life.
