Damage is being assessed in Bono, in the Goceano area, while cleanup operations are underway, the day after the large fire that affected the Monte Rasu woodland. The flames were extinguished only with the intervention of seven aircraft.
And Mayor Michele Solinas is furious, and like other administrators, he is calling for more controls on the territory.
"It's hell, a day like we've perhaps never experienced before," says the mayor. "Hectares and hectares of forest, the protected area has gone up in smoke." Yet, he emphasizes, "for over twenty days" someone has been trying "to start fires continuously, always in the same places. But these actions cannot be prevented."
Prevention, according to Solinas, "should be greater. Three years ago, we had continuous patrols by the Barracellari companies, part of the Civil Protection Department. They worked. This is the time to take the situation seriously, because we risk seeing an immensely valuable forest heritage destroyed."
