After the fire on Sunday night, part of the Macomer CPR is unusable. The damage caused by the intense and acrid smoke, which invaded the entire building, in particular the block where the protest broke out by some migrants, who set fire to the mattresses, was extensive .
Following the involvement of the Prefecture of Nuoro, some tents were erected in the internal courtyard of the structure, made available by the Civil Protection, to accommodate, for a few days, the migrants who were in the block affected by the fire. Restoration work is expected to begin immediately.
Meanwhile, investigations are proceeding at a rapid pace to shed light on the matter (it is yet another fire in the space of a few months), with those responsible for the fire having been identified and placed under close surveillance. The protest apparently broke out due to a situation that many consider unsustainable and undermines human conditions inside the facility, where migrants must remain for up to 18 months.
The mayor of Macomer, Riccardo Uda, also denounces the lack of involvement of the municipal administration in the CPR's activities.
An outdoor protest has also been called, with the Sardinian No CPR assembly announcing a mobilization and demonstration set for next April 6 (starting at 11am), in front of the Macomer CPR. «The situation in Macomer», it is written among other things in a statement, «does not derive from the change in regulations, but from the purposes of a structure that was conceived to deny the human dignity of migrants». Hence the day of garrisoned struggle, set for next April 6th.
The case came to the attention of the Government, with an urgent report requested from the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi by the AVS deputy Francesca Ghirra, who attacks: «All the CPRs are packed because this disgusting system doesn't work. Isn't it time to structure a system that is more respectful of people's rights? The CPRs are concentration camps in which people's fundamental rights are violated, places of degradation, suffering and abandonment which do not serve to address migratory phenomena and must be closed."
