The excise duty on diesel has been cut to 6.1 cents (from 12.2 cents), and in Sardinia the price of diesel has skyrocketed to €2.378 per liter. This is according to the latest monitoring by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, updated at 8:30 this morning, of average pump prices in Italian regions. Only Friuli Venezia Giulia (€2.382), Sicily (€2.38), and the province of Bolzano (€2.40) are more expensive. Gasoline on the island stands at €2.166 per liter.

The survey was carried out while waiting for the price cap announced by Eni to become effective starting Monday.

The Italian energy giant, which is publicly controlled, has set a maximum price limit for fuels sold by Enilive, equal to 2.19 euros per litre for diesel and 1.99 euros per litre for petrol.

The price cap "will be applied starting September 28, for an initial duration of 30 days, with the possibility of extension until the end of the year."
