Sardinia is facing hell, and the week that just ended has already gone down in meteorological history as the hottest ever.
Widespread temperatures above 45 degrees, peaks above 47 (in Ollastra, Muravera and Orani), and Cagliari also recorded its all-time record with 45.2 degrees reached last Friday, thus smashing the previous peak of 44.6 degrees of 24 July 2023 and, going back in time, that of July 1983 (43.6) and, again in July, 1978 (40.2).
The extreme heat is claiming victims every day (yesterday another death in Teulada: a 72-year-old man found lifeless in his car).
While the healthcare system is under pressure, like the firefighting system, with field forces overworked. And farmers and ranchers are being brought to their knees.
Furthermore, heat impacts the costs sustained by families and businesses to combat it (Confesercenti estimates at a national level between 6 and 12 billion euros per year) and causes the electricity grid and public services to go haywire on a daily basis.
