Margine Rosso beach in Quartu is deserted. Where last year it was difficult to find a spot to set up an umbrella, now there are just a couple of seagulls. We thought the worst was over, but the storm surges of recent days have further damaged the stretch of beach below the railing. It used to be one of the busiest beaches, but now, even on weekends, there's no one there. No bathers dare lay out their towels in the mountains of seagrass that cover all the former sand, and further ahead, where the dog area has been created, people fight over a clean space.

"What a shame to see the beach in this condition," says beachgoer Francesco Zucca. "I used to go there all the time, but now I've been forced to move. I don't understand why we didn't remove the seaweed like they did in other areas, grouping it at the beginning of the beach near the steps, and then putting it back in its place."

The municipality explained the reason at the beginning of the season: the seagrass cannot be moved from that stretch of beach because it helps the beach recover and avoid what happened at Capitana, where the beach is no longer there. These last few days of sirocco winds have polluted the sea and brought seaweed to other stretches of the beach, although certainly not to the point of creating extreme situations like the one at Margine Rosso. Problems are also present at other beaches along the Quartu coast, from Marina Residence to Santa Luria, where they still have to contend with a long exposed pipe in the sand, making access to the sea almost impossible for the elderly and disabled, and where services, starting with restrooms, are lacking.
