Work has resumed on the former Youth Hostel, a municipal facility overlooking the sea designed to enhance the accommodation offering of the city of Porto Torres through a redevelopment and conversion project into a low-impact, energy-efficient hotel.

In the next summer season, 23 new beds will be available in a building that enjoys a privileged location , a new window overlooking Balai Bay.

The latest work by Mit Engineering & Consulting srl, the company awarded the concession through a public tender, has allowed the dismantling of the roof and attic , which had fallen into disrepair, and a complete remediation of the garden , including the uprooting of roots and invasive trees and the removal of debris from the outdoor courtyard. Work on the structure, which has been completely gutted and with only the load-bearing walls remaining standing, will resume at full speed in the coming days, adhering to an 18-month schedule to ensure the hotel's opening by June 2027 .

Construction work will begin, transforming the old hostel into a facility offering ten rooms of varying sizes and capacity. The project, designed by local architect Omar Simoni, features an innovative concept that embraces the use of natural materials. The building, constructed in 1972 and used as a youth hostel, closed after many years due to uninhabitability.

THE PROJECT – Ten rooms are planned for the hotel, located on a plot of approximately 640 square meters in a B3 homogeneous zone, designated as public S2 (spaces for facilities of common interest) according to the current General Urban Plan of the Municipality of Porto Torres. The ground floor will house four rooms (two triples and two doubles), a room used as a breakfast bar , a storage room with a restroom for staff and bar patrons, and the reception hall . The first floor will house six rooms (one triple and five doubles) and a small storage room. The rooms will feature Wi-Fi, a smart TV, easy-to-adjust temperature and lighting controls , and electronic room access.

Of the current building, only the perimeter walls will be preserved , while the rest will undergo extraordinary maintenance. The internal partitions will be almost entirely demolished to allow for a different layout of the rooms. The stairwell, in an advanced state of disrepair and structurally compromised, will be demolished and relocated to maximize the future layout of the common areas and bedrooms.
