103 inmates were transferred to Sardinia after the collapse of part of Rome's Regina Coeli prison. But the "stopgap" solution has already been questioned: as Roberto Melis, secretary of Consipe, denounces, "according to internal reports," many of those transferred did not come from the sector actually affected by the collapse , but from other parts of the prison, raising doubts about the correctness of the criteria adopted.
" In the midst of an emergency, time was found to select and send the most problematic individuals to Sardinia, while retaining the 'more manageable' ones . "In light of these anomalies," Melis continues, "it would be appropriate for the DAP (Department of Penitentiary Administration ) to order an urgent inspection of the Regina Coeli prison management to verify the correctness of the procedures adopted and ascertain any responsibilities."
"The emergency management is generating an unprecedented operational crisis ," Melis continues. "Prison Police personnel are forced to work grueling shifts and manage complex clinical and operational situations. The result is a documented increase in work-related stress and a concrete risk of mental and physical collapse within the Corps." Hence the request for an immediate deployment of Penitentiary Police reinforcements, the urgent assignment of healthcare personnel to emergency facilities, and a comprehensive review of the national and regional transfer system. Melis also emphasizes that, with regard to the Alghero Prison, an urgent meeting has been requested between the Regional Superintendent and the staff to address "the serious critical issues that are emerging in a constructive and transparent manner."
