On February 18, 2023, in Silì (a hamlet of Oristano), Monica Vinci killed her thirteen-year-old daughter Chiara Carta with dozens of stab wounds and then attempted suicide.
Today, the Cagliari Assize Court acquitted her because it deemed her not punishable due to total mental insanity, but indicated that the woman must remain hospitalized for twenty years in a Rems ( Residency for the enforcement of security measures).
The murder (the teenager was killed with 36 stab wounds) was triggered by an argument over the girl wearing a miniskirt, but psychiatrists' examination revealed that the 54-year-old woman was severely psychotic.
Today, the Cagliari Assize Court, presided over by Judge Lucia Perra, with Roberto Cau as assistant judge, handed down a verdict of acquittal, which acknowledged his total incapacity to understand and decide at the time of the crime.
The defense had always maintained that serious psychiatric issues were behind the tragedy. Prosecutor Valerio Bagattini, however, had requested a 19-year sentence: the prosecutor's argument was that the defendant was not completely incompetent.
