"Rights, work, and dignity." With these words, workers and unions gathered this morning in Piazza Palazzo in Cagliari for the general strike for women's rights, promoted by the CGIL.
Flags and signs animated the rally, organized the day after the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to reaffirm the connection between economic independence and the fight against gender-based violence.
The data reveal a continuing disparity: in Sardinia, the female employment rate is 14 percentage points lower than the male one (50% versus 64%), and over 50% of women work part-time, compared to 28% of men. Added to this is a wage gap that can reach up to 8,000 euros per year, especially in the tertiary, tourism, and restaurant sectors, where the female presence is highest.
The regional secretary of the CGIL Sardinia, Fausto Durante, the general secretary of the Filcams CGIL Sardinia, Nella Milazzo , and Francesca D'Agostino of the Flc CGIL, were present at the rally.
Participants also criticized the government's policies on work, maternity, and rights, calling for stronger measures to promote female employment and balance work and family life.
