Testimonies are being collected from the world of petty crime in Carbonia and attempts are being made to reconstruct the last hours of life of Giovanni Musu, 53, who was stabbed to death and then set on fire in the Rosmarino municipal park in the mining town .

The investigation is being coordinated by the Cagliari Public Prosecutor's Office and entrusted to the Carabinieri of the Carbonia Company and the Investigative Unit of the Cagliari Provincial Command. Once the stab wounds were identified, investigators began treating the case as a homicide, the first of 2026 in Sardinia .

Musu, an unemployed man from Carbonia, was known to law enforcement for minor criminal offenses . The Carabinieri interviewed several witnesses, primarily those involved in petty crime . They are investigating the victim's background and suspect the killer is known to investigators . This would explain the need to remove evidence and any fingerprints , which are believed to be from contacts related to an argument that ultimately led to the murder.

The alarm was raised at 4 in the morning, when firefighters rushed to Rosmarino Park to put out a fire and among the burning brush they noticed the shape of Musu on the ground, in a supine position, his legs engulfed in flames .

The Carabinieri, prosecutor Danilo Tronci, and the medical examiner, who performed an initial examination of the body, were on site, pending the autopsy, which will be ordered by the Prosecutor's Office in the coming hours. For now, the hypothesis is that Musu was killed by a stab to the throat . After carrying out technical tests to gather any useful evidence, the park—which is popular with locals—was closed for several hours.

It remains to be clarified, among other things, whether the attack took place inside the park or whether the body was transported there later .
