Following the anticipated positive assessment of the project's environmental compatibility, which arrived last Thursday from the Decision-Making Services Conference , the process for Cagliari's new stadium moves forward with another important event, closely linked to an international event: the 2032 European Championship. The capital is among the eleven cities bidding to host matches in the event, which Italy will co-host with Turkey. A meeting will be held on July 30th between the Municipality, Cagliari Calcio, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), and UEFA delegate Michele Uva. It will be the first meeting since the release of €50 million from the Region .

The meeting is part of the working group established by the FIGC for the UEFA 2032 project. It involves a series of meetings with all the candidate cities, starting with Rome next Monday with Sport and Health, and concluding on July 31st (the day after the transfer from Cagliari) with Palermo . Compared to the other proposals, the Sardinian candidacy includes the project for a completely new stadium, to be named after Gigi Riva, which would be built on the site of the old Sant'Elia stadium.

In October 2026, UEFA asked the FIGC to select the five Italian stadiums that will host the European Championship matches. As previously announced several times in recent years, three cities are already confirmed: Milan, Rome, and Turin. The other two will have to be chosen from the remaining eight bids, and along with Cagliari, there are also Bari, Bologna, Florence, Genoa, Naples, Palermo, and Verona . In other words, all the cities that hosted the 1990 World Cup, except Udine.

Meanwhile, following the positive environmental assessment for the issuance of the PAUR (Single Regional Authorization Provision), the project continues with other steps, including the Regional Council's resolution to complete the environmental process, the updated project presentation, and the new declaration of public interest from the City Council. The goal is to put the project out to tender in early 2026, with construction beginning no later than March 2027. This will ensure that, after Italia '90, Cagliari will once again host an international football event.
