"This choice is not only wrong, it is irresponsible and I cannot accept it." City councilor Corrado Sorrentino lashes out against the fitness and play area on Via Roma, inaugurated just over two months ago in the first section returned to the city of Cagliari. "I will make sure to request the decommissioning of these two areas as soon as possible, or at least I will ask for them to be moved to safer areas," said the councilor, a former water polo athlete and multiple medalist in swimming.
Sorrentino's explanation starts from the fact that " the conditions for practicing sports and for the well-being of children are completely lacking ", as it is immersed "in smog and traffic". The project, which became a reality after two years of construction, has seen several children and young people approach it in these two months. At a time when traffic is still almost non-existent, given the restrictions still in force while waiting for the reopening of the second section of Via Roma. "Imagine, as unfortunately happens every day, that a vehicle swerves: a car, a bus, or even worse, a truck", Sorrentino denounces, highlighting "dramatic" consequences for those who would be in the fitness or play area in the event of an accident nearby .
"This area is in fact sadly known for heavy traffic and a high concentration of air pollutants, smog to be clear as fine dust, with negative effects on health", continues the councilor, who points out potential "respiratory diseases (such as asthma or chronic bronchitis), cardiovascular diseases, eye disorders, greater susceptibility to infections, increased risk of lung diseases" . And, in addition, Sorrentino points out "the lack of a shaded area, which with the torrid heat of Cagliari that we have in summer could also give rise to heat stroke during sports activities".
For all these reasons, Sorrentino defines the project of the new Via Roma as "devoid of evaluation, I would say Diabolical, because I cannot believe that whoever had this idea and whoever put it into practice was so unaware! I therefore express a very high level of perplexity on a choice that goes beyond the absurd , because creating a space dedicated to sports and children's well-being in one of the busiest areas of the city, where smog and pollution reign supreme is madness". And, he concludes, "a waste of public money to create something dangerous , not only for health, but also for the safety of people".
