Can public art become a parable for today's world? This is the invitation and the collective challenge posed by the Urban Center association in Cagliari. A participatory art project is underway until Thursday, May 29, and will lead to the creation of a new work in the Galleria del Sale, the city's first open-air contemporary art gallery that celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, proving to be a place that is always alive with contamination and interaction. The final product will become part of the over 80 works in the space that runs along the Molentargius canal up to the coast of Su Siccu, a peripheral area that has long suffered from abandonment and neglect.
The works were created starting in 2014, thanks to the coordination of Urban Center and under the artistic direction of Daniele Gregorini, who together with artists from all over Europe - as well as from the rest of Italy and Sardinia - has carried out the project in the name of collaboration and interaction with the territory. "As Urban Center we always push in the direction of collaboration", says Gregorini. "Trying to infect artists, both stylistically and in terms of values, is a beautiful parable for the world. Driven by the same spirit, we have been carrying forward the concept of Home Network for several years, a collective that aims to put artists and patrons in the art sector in communication ".
Galleria del Sale wants to be an artistic community attractor and in continuous evolution as in the nature of street art, an artistic form that expresses itself through different techniques and languages. So also this year, thanks to funding from the Fondazione di Sardegna, it can see the creation of a new participatory work in which several people will take part, without age limits, involved through a call launched on the social channels of Urban Center. "They are all people who do not know each other and who meet with the sole intention of making a work of art together", says Gregorini. " The goal is to refine participatory art, directly involving people in the development of a work that ultimately gives itself to the community . If we take it as a parable, let's try to imagine a city or a territory in which everyone tries to develop discussions that have an impact on the community and that do so with an intellectual effort and a comparison".
At the same time as the work is being built, a barter process will be launched – Agiudu Torrau – curated by architect Paola Corrias. This is a traditional practice, studied in an innovative way according to which through the game of exchange we try to increase interactions between subjects so that collaboration becomes an increasingly important part of people's daily lives . "The project has already been tested in recent years in different contexts, in the town of Tertenia and in the Artaruga coworking space in Cagliari, meeting with great curiosity and success", concludes Corrias. Barter and participatory art are therefore linked through active and synergic collaboration between participants.
The grand finale of the project will be on May 29th with two events scheduled : during the morning there will be a guided tour led by the tourist guide Bagamunda, specialized in street art, while in the evening, at 6 pm at Palazzo Siotto, in via dei Genovesi, there will be a conference in which we will talk about public art in public spaces. All events are free and accessible.
