The discovery of the Foresters at Mulinu Becciu: the specimens, eight in all, have been seizedOne person reported and 8 goldfinches and linnets seized .
This is the balance of the operation conducted by the Forestry Stations of Cagliari and Dolianova and by the Investigative Nucleus of the Forestry Corps.
The discovery was made during some checks in Cagliari , in the Mulinu Becciu district , where some cages containing the specimens then seized were positioned inside the courtyard of a house . The possession of linnets is always forbidden, while that of goldfinches must be accompanied by a certificate of marketability, which has not been shown to the investigators.
The Foresters then proceeded to confiscate the animals . After a veterinary visit, some specimens were released in Molentargius Park . Two specimens , which instead presented injuries due to the constraint in the cage, are under treatment awaiting release .
Keeping goldfinches in a cage without documentation is a crime punishable by imprisonment for between two and eight months . In the case of specimens kept in cages, i.e. in conditions incompatible with their nature, so as to induce them to injure themselves in an attempt to free themselves, the crime is configured which punishes the offender with arrest for up to one year .
The operation is part of the constant activity of the Forestry Corps to protect biodiversity .
