Cagliari, Bombers: "There's no way to stop the workplace death toll."
The national leader of the UIL is on the island for the election of the new regional secretary. It's not that "this massacre can't be stopped," but "it doesn't want to be stopped." These are harsh words, spoken today in Cagliari by the national secretary of the UIL, PierPaolo Bombardieri, when questioned about yet another workplace accident (yesterday, Michele Fuedda, 40, from Pula, lost his life after falling from a bridge on a construction site on the new State Road 195).
Bombardieri is on the island for the election of the new regional secretary, after two and a half months of administration.
"Everyone," the UIL leader continued, "must assume their own responsibility regarding workplace deaths. The government has opened a discussion, which is certainly a positive development. Now we need concrete action. Decisions are needed, we need to intervene on contracts and, in turn, on the lowest-price tenders. We need to decide how to use the resources."
Bombardieri also responded to a question about the Regional Council: "I don't give grades because we're used to looking at the concrete facts." And when asked specifically about assessing the concrete facts, the secretary said, "They don't exist now."
There was also a discussion on tariffs . "The feeling is that the knock-on effects are being underestimated," emphasized the head of the national UIL union. "It's true that we're waiting for the final agreement," but American protectionism could "result in the loss of up to 100,000 jobs in Italy. If public money is given to companies, it shouldn't be used to ensure their profits don't decline significantly, but to protect paychecks along with the market."
