The first outbreak of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in Sardinia was recorded last June , prompting restrictions, culling, and vaccination campaigns. But today, good news has arrived for the Sardinian cattle sector: a decision by the General Directorate of Health – Public Veterinary Health and Food Safety Service – has lifted the restricted zone established in June 2025.
"This result is the fruit of coordinated work between the Region, the local health authorities (ASL), and veterinarians, and the collaboration of the livestock sector," stated Regional President and interim Health Councilor Alessandra Todde. "We will continue to maintain high levels of vigilance, ensuring surveillance and prompt intervention to protect livestock and health safety."
"The resumption of cattle movements represents a long-awaited step for the sector and is justified by the results achieved," adds Agriculture Councilor Francesco Agus. "The extremely high vaccination rate demonstrates the responsibility of Sardinian farmers and protects our animals compared to the rest of Italy. From March 2nd, it will be possible to submit compensation requests to offset the increased costs incurred due to the health lockdown ." According to the Region, the lifting of restrictions comes after the completion of local inspections , the favorable outcome of veterinary visits by the competent local health authorities, and the achievement of high vaccination coverage: 97.8% of establishments and 96.5% of animals vaccinated, as part of the mandatory regional plan.
The measure is in line with European regulations : Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/190 of 21 January 2026 set the deadline for the protection zone as January 26 and for the surveillance zone as February 12. As the conditions that imposed the restrictions no longer apply, the Region has decided to lift them.
