"Bortigali, what a disgrace." The town's mayor, Francesco Caggiari, has taken a harsh stance in the wake of the mysterious attack on city councilor Tonio Floris, a member of the ruling coalition. Floris's cars parked outside his home on Via Grazia Deledda were set on fire during the night between Thursday and Friday.

An episode that tends to inflame, indeed, the upcoming electoral campaign for the renewal of the city council, with elections to be held in June.

The mayor then offers a very grim analysis of the situation. "What has been done is a cowardly act that must be condemned without any ifs or buts," the mayor writes, "perpetrated against a person and a family who were serious and well-mannered, reserved yet always there for everyone, integrated into the social fabric of the town, but always with a sense of discretion and an attitude that was never over the top, never intrusive or boastful. A highly reliable person who made hard work and integrity his credo."

The mayor goes beyond the expression of solidarity. "I believe that someone, some people, especially in recent years, have done everything they can to pollute the wells, to create a hostile, almost guerrilla-like climate that certainly doesn't belong in our town, which is known for its good living, hospitality, and a social fabric without major divisions, where it was truly a pleasure to live, dwell, and socialize." For the mayor, such incidents sound like a defeat for everyone. "With these moonlights, the quiet people, instead of coming to live in Bortigali, are leaving, thus continuing the town's transformation into a community of barbarians and arrogant people, of bullies and people unwilling to follow the rules of democratic living."

Caggiari quotes a Sardinian proverb: "Sa linna de su monte brusia su monte." He adds: "Whoever harms Bortigali and the people of Bortigali doesn't come from far away; it's a relative of ours, a neighbor of ours, someone you see every day on the street or at the bar, someone in some ways even above suspicion, but still someone with a bad heart and who makes the atmosphere heavy for everyone. It's true that when you hit rock bottom, you can only rise again. This is the hope and wish for my town and its future."
