Six mixed-breed puppies, just a few days old, were abandoned inside a cardboard box in a rest area, likely by someone who wanted to quickly dispose of the animals. They were found this way along highway 131, just before the turnoff for Bonorva , yesterday morning by Carabinieri officers from the local unit, during a patrol of the area.
Officers from the Pozzomaggiore and Mores stations were called to the scene to rescue the little four-legged friends, still with their eyes closed and their umbilical stumps attached . They were placed in the Carabinieri patrol car to shelter from the cold. Two other puppies were unfortunately found dead on the roadway , likely hit by passing vehicles after emerging from the box.
The rescue operation began immediately to find suitable accommodation, involving Bonorva Municipality staff, who activated the veterinary service of the Sassari Local Health Authority.
Meanwhile, the military requested telephone assistance from an abandoned animal shelter in the Olbia branch. The operators, informed of the puppies' condition, provided first aid instructions. Meanwhile, the Carabinieri, following the veterinarians' instructions, kept them warm and administered a small amount of honey with a syringe, as a temporary support while they awaited appropriate treatment.
The six puppies were then taken in by the Alghero municipal dog kennel, where they now receive the necessary care and attention.
Meanwhile, the military have begun investigations to reconstruct what happened and identify those responsible for the crime of animal abandonment, punishable by the Penal Code .
This intervention demonstrates the Carabinieri's constant attention to animal welfare, through gestures of care and protection aimed at defenseless beings, whose survival, in the first days of life, depends entirely on the assistance they receive.
