The Basilica of San Gavino was filled with love, a feeling of affection and friendship that the community of Porto Torres felt strongly for Antonio Corda , the 90-year-old who was involved in the violent impact with a car that destroyed his Ape car and threw him onto the asphalt, with rescue efforts unfortunately proving in vain.

For the final farewell, the crowded church welcomed the coffin of the pensioner, remembered by all for his genuine smile, his kindness and irony and, at the same time, the humanity of his open and humble character .

Corda had been rammed by an Alfa Brera last Saturday, and died twenty-four hours after the accident in the intensive care unit of the Sassari civil hospital.

Monsignor Salvatore Masia, the parish priest of the basilica, celebrated the farewell Mass. He expressed his condolences to his family, his wife Settimia, his sons Tino and Pierpaolo, as well as to the many relatives and friends who accompanied him on his final journey, along with many acquaintances and residents of the Villaggio Satellite neighborhood.

“Life does not end but enters into true life, forever,” said the parish priest in his homily.

A former worker at the former petrochemical plant, he had a handshake with everyone. The driver of the car that hit him, a 35-year-old from Porto Torres, fled the scene following the impact with the Ape car, abandoning his Alfa Brera in the Serra Li Pozzi neighborhood. Tracked down by the Carabinieri, he was charged with failure to render aid and causing serious bodily harm through negligence and subsequently investigated for manslaughter . The young man was found to be without a driver's license, a document that had been confiscated in the past for drunk driving.
