Last night, at 2:37 a.m., an emergency cesarean section was performed at the Alghero Civil Hospital, saving the lives of a mother and her baby daughter.
The woman arrived at the emergency room shortly after 2:00 a.m., in critical condition due to premature placental abruption. The emergency protocol was immediately activated, and the on-call team went into action, including an anesthesiologist specializing in neonatology, a key figure in managing complex cases.
The surgery was completed in just 30 minutes and the baby was born in good condition.
A very rare event for the Alghero maternity ward, where no similar emergencies had been recorded for over four years.
"This episode demonstrates that the hospital is capable of responding effectively to critical situations," commented Christian Mulas, president of the council's Health Committee , "but we cannot continue to live in a permanent state of emergency."
Mulas calls for immediate interventions: stable activation of the STAM and STEN services (assisted maternal and neonatal transport), presence of pediatricians with neonatology training, strengthening of the active surgical branches and strengthening of the network with the AOU and the Spoke centers.
"Alghero is a tourist city and deserves a structured healthcare system, not just one that's responsive in critical moments. Today we celebrate a life saved, but we need real investment in perinatal safety and the health of all citizens. We can't rely solely on luck," Mulas concludes.
