They've caused strikes and closures in schools, and at Marino Hospital they've sparked the unions' anger. At Brotzu, for now, there's been a wave of revulsion. But they've arrived there too: the rats have even entered Sardinia's most important hospital.

One, dead, was captured on video this morning, lying on the floor of an office. Other sightings have reportedly been recorded within the facility in recent days: it's still too early to tell whether it was the same rodent or whether it's a colony.

Cagliari has certainly seen a dramatic increase in rat-related reports recently, despite the efforts of the metropolitan city's Insect Control Center, which responds promptly to every reported incident.
