Sardinian roads are a constant massacre, claiming over a hundred lives each year, and sadly, even in 2025, the statistics won't improve. Pedestrians hit on crosswalks, cars thrown from overpasses, and motorcyclists losing control of their motorcycles. A lethal mix of recklessness, speeding, and accidents that has already claimed 35 lives in the last three months.
And the updated report on Monday evening, with yet another cross on Provincial Road 15, brings back the eternal debate over who is to blame: is it the fault of Sardinia's old and unsafe roads, or of those who drive at high speeds, ignoring the most basic rules of the Highway Code?
Critical issues
"There can't be a single culprit, but the poor condition of our road network certainly plays a central role in accident rates," says Andrea Murru of the Italian Association of Road Victims and Families in Cagliari. "The statistics, however, speak clearly: road accidents occur due to careless driving, fatigue among workers pressured by hectic shifts, the influence of drugs and alcohol, and, of course, the dangerous nature of the roads. We must therefore address a multifaceted problem that cannot be reduced to simply pointing the finger at the roads."
