A decree comes into force today that cracks down on those who throw rubbish from vehicle windows and those who abandon it along the roadside, in ditches: a phenomenon unfortunately familiar to those who travel the roads of Sardinia.

The mayor of Castiadas, Eugenio Murgioni, doesn't waste any time in launching his declaration of war against uncivilized people. He addresses "fellow citizens and gracious guests," meaning tourists.

And he writes: "As a Municipality, we wholeheartedly support this measure, because too often we witness behavior that offends our land and the dignity of our community. Anyone who throws a cigarette butt, a handkerchief, a bottle, or a bag out of a car window," Murgioni explains, "is not committing a trivial act, but a serious act of incivility, which defaces the environment, damages the image of the area, and entails social and economic costs for all of us."

It will no longer be necessary to catch the offender red-handed: a single clear image of the vehicle's license plate, captured by municipal or private cameras (where authorized), mobile devices, dashcams, or documented reports from citizens, will suffice. With this change to Article 15 of the Highway Code, it will be possible to trace the vehicle's owner through the Department of Motor Vehicles and notify the fine directly to their home, even after a long period of time.

The fines are severe (DETAILS HERE) . "We will no longer tolerate incivility," says the mayor. "As mayor, I am directly committed to strengthening controls throughout the municipality. Our local police force is already operational with new directives, in collaboration with law enforcement and with the support of the video surveillance systems in place throughout the area."

At the same time, we invite citizens to participate actively: every report, every responsible action is a fundamental contribution to protecting our environment, our tourism, and everyone's quality of life.

Then a plea for responsibility: "Castiadas is an extraordinary land, made of sea, mountains, tradition, and beauty. Those who defile it demonstrate not only incivility, but contempt for the community that lives there. I say enough to those who treat our streets like landfills, and I do so with the force of the law, but above all with the sense of responsibility that every administrator should have towards their own territory. Let us defend our Castiadas together. No more incivility will be tolerated."
