A large fire broke out this afternoon in the countryside of Calasetta, in the Mercureddu area, affecting several hundred meters of land and destroying several hectares of vegetation and Mediterranean scrub.
The flames, fanned by strong winds, spread rapidly, making extinguishing operations particularly complex. Firefighters and four teams from the Assosulcis Civil Protection Agency of Sant'Antioco are working on the scene.
To deal with the emergency and contain the fire, the intervention of two helicopters and a Canadair was necessary.
The situation also required the adoption of safety measures for the public: dozens of people who had gathered along the roads in the area were moved away, and some rural homes were evacuated. Among the theories under consideration regarding the origin of the fire, there is arson, but the authorities' investigations will determine the cause of the fire.
