The trafficker at the helm of the vessel that yesterday killed the 17-year-old girl in the sea in front of the Su Giudeu beach has been identified and arrested .

The Cagliari prosecutor's office, led by prosecutor Emanuele Secci, has acquired videos showing the motorboat arriving at high speed and rearing up in an area crowded with swimmers .

According to an initial reconstruction, based on witness statements and compared with video footage, it appears that none of the migrants realized they had struck and run over someone . They were informed immediately afterward, when the Carabinieri identified the person steering the vessel.

For the moment the man, a 28-year-old Algerian, has not been charged with failure to provide assistance, but he has been arrested for grievous bodily harm and for being considered the alleged smuggler .

The reconstruction

The girl, on vacation with her family, was swimming a few meters from the shoreline when the dinghy swept her away. Rescued by lifeguards, she nearly drowned from the shock and was rushed to Brotzu Hospital. The prognosis, though serious, is fortunately better than initially feared .

Immediately after the impact, the vessel—a fiberglass vessel with an 85-horsepower outboard motor —continued its course through the sea, heading toward the nearby beach of Tuerredda. Once they reached land, the migrants attempted to flee inland, but their escape was short-lived.

Carabinieri from the Domus de Maria and Pula stations, and the Cagliari Operations Unit, immediately tracked down and arrested the group: 14 Algerians, all undocumented. The man at the helm, believed to also be the smuggler, was arrested for aiding and abetting illegal immigration and grievous bodily harm. The 28-year-old was taken to Uta prison .
