Pecorino Romano DOP continues to grow, with production rising—reaching approximately 392,450 quintals, a 7.06% increase over the previous year—and exports (up 12.8% to the United States alone). But now there's a tariff scare.

The data was made official at the members' meeting held yesterday in Alghero, which approved the Consortium's annual budget.

"The 2023/2024 production season concluded with very positive results for Pecorino Romano PDO, confirming its leading role in the Italian dairy sector," a statement said. Of the nearly 297 million liters of sheep's milk withdrawn from the 46 dairies monitored, approximately 229 million were allocated to production, 80.4% of the total.

"These numbers confirm the vitality of our denomination, but also the great responsibility we have to ensure its quality, transparency, and protection," emphasizes Consortium President Gianni Maoddi. "The growth in production and exports demonstrates the growing appreciation of Pecorino Romano around the world, but we must continue to invest in sustainability, legal protection, and promotion."
