Matteo Salvini wants to suspend or revoke the license of those who abandon animals.

The deputy prime minister aims to include the rule in the road safety bill that will arrive in Parliament.

The suspension or revocation, explains Salvini, would arrive "in the most serious hypotheses for those who are caught abandoning an animal on the street, in addition to the penalties already provided for, because in addition to being an act of absolute barbarism and incivility it also risks jeopardizing the safety of those who travel".

According to the Enpa, in 2023 more than 127 animals were sold or abandoned a day, with an increase of 20% compared to 2021. A figure that is even more worrying if crossed with the decrease in adoptions (-10%) and with that of the type of adoptions: in 75% of cases those who adopt only want puppies.

Meanwhile, there are more and more Italians who have a pet and who want to take it on holiday, to the beach and/or travel it, even by plane. On these fronts, the minister undertook to "raise the awareness of local authorities so that they adopt measures to guarantee suitable conditions for animals to access the beaches". And to promote through Enac the activation of work tables with the airlines to "overcome some of the commercial practices that today effectively inhibit the transport of animals by plane, especially for medium-large sized animals for which only passage in the hold is foreseen".

The Enpa agrees with the provision, which however, comments the president Carla Rocchi, «will have no effects for this year's abandoners. For a law to be implemented and make sense, it must be thought of in January for it to take effect in August. If we think about it in August, it will be good for next year».
