Giorgia Meloni must be a tightrope walker. Not only to keep together the alliance with Donald Trump and the support for Ukraine, never questioned in these years of government, but also to keep the different souls of the executive united.

In particular , Lega and Forza Italia, who have opposing opinions on the sensational clash that took place yesterday in the Oval Office between Trump and Zelensky .

"After three years of war and hundreds of thousands of deaths, the time for peace has come. And if someone in Brussels still uses warlike tones, Italy has the right and duty to work together with the US and all those who with tenacity and courage are trying to avoid a Third World War , to give our children a future of peace and prosperity," wrote the leader of the Northern League and deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini on X.

Forza Italia calls for calm. If yesterday Minister Tajani had underlined the need to "keep calm" and "remain prudent" in a very delicate moment, today the national spokesperson of Forza Italia responded directly to the League. " We must try to keep calm , be very careful and responsible. Everyone expresses their positions, Matteo Salvini for example we know this well, he has long been very fascinated by Trump, but beyond everything, we must create the conditions so that what is happening does not result in new tension between the EU and the US . We must try to rediscover the reasons for being together and ensure that we support Zelensky and at the same time also dialogue with Putin to achieve peace. It is not easy, but we must try and this is the role of Italy if it truly wants to be a proactive country, otherwise we stand aside and root for either Trump or Zelensky. Cheering is never a good thing in this situation, we must be the ones who try to overcome the impasse in which the West evidently finds itself at the moment".

The Carroccio's reply was immediately sent back, with foreign affairs chief Paolo Formentini: « The calm invoked by FI is personified by their dear Ursula Von der Leyen who is leading Italy and Europe into the abyss . Trump is imposing an epochal change, if we wait for Macron and company, Italian businesses and families will pay the price. The EU born as a dream is now a cage of constraints, absurd rules, taxes and bans. Long live Freedom, long live Trump ».

And again Nevi, Forza Italia , commenting on Salvini's meetings with Paolo Zampolli, special envoy for Italy chosen by the president of the United States: «Salvini can meet whoever he wants, but foreign policy is up to Antonio Tajani and Giorgia Meloni who has the final say . In foreign policy what counts are the decisions in international institutions that are taken by the prime minister and the foreign minister representing the country and on the basis of the decisions taken by Parliament and the Council of Ministers, those are the decisions that count and that are valid for our country and not other meetings, legitimate, but in a personal capacity».

Yesterday evening, after the dramatic Trump-Zelensky clash, Giorgia Meloni released a very neutral statement underlining the need for an " immediate summit between the US, European states and allies to speak frankly about how we intend to face today's great challenges, starting with Ukraine , which we have defended together in recent years, and those that we will be called upon to face in the future".

"Every division of the West," the prime minister added, "makes us all weaker and favors those who would like to see the decline of our civilization. Not of its power or its influence, but of the principles that founded it, first and foremost freedom. A division would not suit anyone."

Now the Prime Minister is called upon to mediate between the League and Forza Italia .
