With the beginning of the new year, the Municipality of Mandas is preparing to celebrate one of its "illustrious children", whose centenary will be celebrated in 2022. This is Renato Raccis, one of the champions that Sardinia has given to the history of Italian football.
Born on 17 June 2022 in Mandas, Raccis was - recalls the municipal administration - the first Sardinian top scorer in Serie A.
In the top flight he wore the shirts of Livorno (in 1942-43 and from 1945 to 1947) and Milan (1947-48), in both cases coming second behind Grande Torino.
He died in 1979, at the age of 57, and the municipal stadium is dedicated to him.
As mentioned, 2022 will be the year of the centenary of the birth and the town hall led by the mayor Umberto Oppus is preparing to celebrate it with a series of events.
Initiatives "both to honor his memory and to spread, as the former President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi wrote on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of his birth, true values and a passion for healthy sport".
