Yesterday afternoon, the Electra Theatre in Iglesias was the setting for the press conference to present the third Rally Sulcis Iglesiente, which will be held on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 March. The asphalt race, which will include ten special stages (72.98km time trial, 407.24 total), will be the opening round of the Coppa Rally di Zona and the Regional Championship Delegazione Sardegna Aci Sport.
The Rally, organized by the Iglesias team Mistral Racing with the support of the Sardinia Region, the Sardinia Foundation, Ac Cagliari, Aci Sport Delegation Sardinia and the Cantina di Santadi, will involve eleven municipalities: Iglesias, Carbonia, Gonnesa, Narcao, Nuxis, Perdaxius, San Giovanni Suergiu, Santadi, Sant'Antioco, Tratalias and Villaperuccio.
Present, in addition to the organizers Giacomo Spanu and Gabriele Deidda, were also the regional councilor for Education and Sport Ilaria Portas, the mayors of Iglesias Mauro Usai, of Villaperuccio Marcellino Piras and of Santadi Massimo Impera, the municipal councilors for Sport of Iglesias Vito Spiga, of Carbonia Giorgia Meli and of San Giovanni Suergiu Marco Zusa.
“This is a special third edition for us, because it coincides with the tenth anniversary of the foundation of Scuderia Mistral Racing. We are very proud to have succeeded – declared the president of the team Giacomo Spanu – with a young reality like ours, to distinguish ourselves not only on the racetracks with our crews but also to bring a rally to a territory that had never had an event of this kind. Registrations are also arriving from the Peninsula and we are satisfied. We have tried to offer interesting new features to participants and the public. We hope that everything goes well and that it can be an edition full of entertainment and fun. I will also reveal the big surprise of this edition. At the start of the race there will also be the three-time European champion Luca Rossetti, who has chosen our rally as a test race and we can't wait to see him in action”.
Regional Councilor Ilaria Portas commented: “The largest institution in Sardinia is alongside these events, because when sport becomes a vehicle for many other values, we understand that we are going in the right direction, that is, to direct resources where more significant and important objectives can be achieved, such as revealing the beauty of the territory through such a rich path. As a Sulcitana, I see an event like this in a very positive way because sport is a vehicle to make known the beauty of Sulcis. Furthermore, it is not ordinary for municipalities to come together, jointly, for a project of sport and promotion, and this is a truly positive signal, which is why the Sardinia Region is at your side. And today, my presence, wants to underline precisely this. Thanks to Mistral Racing that organizes this event with so much commitment”.
For Gabriele Deidda, of the Mistral Racing Board of Directors, “The countdown is about to begin, and despite the unknowns that, in various ways, we are facing, we are happy with how the organizational machine is proceeding, we can't wait to offer the new special tests to the crews and the public, who we expect in large numbers. The incoming registrations give us hope to repeat the numbers of the previous editions”.
The president of the Automobile Club Cagliari Antonello Fiori stated: “I would like to thank the organizers of Mistral Racing, from the president Giacomo Spanu to the entire Board of Directors, for having managed to complete the important task of organizing such a significant event not only for our Automobile Club, but at a regional and national level. It is an event that we await with great pleasure and thanks also go to the Region of Sardinia, to the Municipalities of Iglesias, Carbonia and to all the administrations that support and welcome the event. Congratulations to all participants, to all the staff and to all the race officials who will ensure that this Rally is carried forward. This is the third edition, it is an event that is now well-established and awaited by all sportsmen, after having been a round of the Regional Championship it has become a stage of the Coppa Rally di Zona and of various national trophies. We hope for further growth, also because it is an event much loved by the public and that always knows how to renew itself with new tests”.
Mauro Usai, mayor of Iglesias and president of the Fondazione Cammino minerario di Santa Barbara commented: “The Foundation joins the institutional partners who each give patronage and also contribute financially to the realization of this important sporting event because the Rally Sulcis Iglesiente is, like the Cammino minerario di Santa Barbara, an initiative to promote and relaunch tourism in our territory but above all a vehicle that allows you to discover the scenic beauty and identity, an essential part of the Sulcis Iglesiente tourist product, also through the promotion of events such as motorsport”.
"We are very happy to have been able to build support for an initiative that has become a certainty for Sulcis Iglesiente and for the world of motorsports that, from competitors to enthusiasts, awaits it with interest. The hope is that the important and decisive support of the Sardinia Region will never be lacking", concluded the mayor of Carbonia Pietro Morittu.
The engineer Edoardo Di Lauro illustrated the route, describing the characteristics of the track. Saturday 22nd, from 9 to 11:30, the Fontanamare shakedown will begin, along the panoramic road to Nebida. At 15, the starting ceremony in Piazza Sella, in Iglesias, followed by double passages on the Is Arruastas test (4.67km, starting at 15.15 and 18) and on the Bacu Abis (9.42km, at 15.55 and 18.40), then the night regrouping at the Monteponi Sports Field in Iglesias. At 8am on Sunday 23rd, after entering the service park of the second day hosted in Carbonia, the doubles will return on three other special stages: Nuxis-Santadi (7.49km, 9.35am and 1.30pm), Perdaxius (5.27km, 10.10am and 2.05pm) and Maladroxia (9.64km, 10.55am and 2.50pm), in Sant'Antioco. After the first pass, around 11am the cars will stop in San Giovanni Suergiu for the stamp check and then at the service park in Carbonia, from 11.55am. At the end of the second lap the games will be over and the competitors will return to Iglesias for the awards ceremony, scheduled for 4pm.
The Rally will be valid for the Trofeo Pirelli Accademia Crz, the R Italian Trophy, Michelin Trofeo Italia Crz, Mrf Trophy Crz. In addition to these, there is the second Trofeo #nonmollaremai (for the last classified crew and dedicated to the memory of the speaker Tommy Rossi, voice of the rally in Sardinia) and the first Trofeo Cammino minerario di Santa Barbara (for the first classified crew among the “two-wheel drive” cars). The latter is one of the novelties of 2025 and makes the organizers particularly proud, because it establishes a collaboration between two excellences that are committed to promoting the Sulcis Iglesiente area.
