The Public Register of Oppositions , active since last July 27 and designed to solve the problem of the "wild phone calls" of companies looking for contracts, "is proving to be a flop" .
Consumer associations denounce this, according to which the 2.7 million Italians who have signed up to the appropriate platform so far hoping not to be harassed on the phone by call centers continue to receive annoying commercial calls. And there are complaints to the Guarantor for privacy and prosecutors.
According to the data collected by Codacons , in fact, more than one user out of 2 registered in the Register (about 55%) continues to be targeted by commercial telephone calls: in 40% of cases these are proposals linked to energy supply contracts, in 32% in telephony offers.
Many of these calls come from foreign call centers, to which the Italian legislation on telemarketing does not apply, and from automated systems that use fictitious numbers so as not to be traced and not to incur legal penalties that can reach 20 million. EUR.
For this reason, Codacons has submitted a complaint to the Privacy Guarantor, the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office and Antitrust in which it is asked to investigate violations of the new Register, also for possible cases of harassment and unfair commercial practices.
And also the president of the Commission of Inquiry on Consumer Rights, Simone Baldelli , filed a complaint with the Guarantor, to report illegal calls and ask the Authority's offices "to prepare a specific form for this type of notification from citizens. , in which it is possible to indicate the numbers from which unwanted calls are received and all other useful information to be able to verify the responsibility for violations at all levels and to apply the penalties provided for ".
