A new space for the alternative and independent scene, bringing fresh energy and perspective to the local movement: this is the mission of "Break the Bay," a new Cagliari event format designed to bring rock back to the capital's nightlife. On Saturday, October 4th, at the InOut Music Club on Viale Marconi 173, established island bands such as Quercia, Packers, and Vilma will perform, alongside the young Toothless Unicorns and renowned producer-DJ Inuza.
As the Break the Bay guys explain, "For the first edition, we chose InOut, a perfect location to kick off the project: central, stunning, welcoming, and with the right mood for a night of guitars and heavy bass." This represents a new way out of the impasse that Cagliari's many local niches have been experiencing for several years, due to inflexible neighborhood committees and overly strict noise regulations. "Tomorrow is just the beginning: the goal is to grow Break the Bay with new dates and collaborations, creating increasingly frequent and engaging opportunities for bands and audiences."
The evening
Starting at 7:00 PM, InOut will be the stage for this promising experiment, immediately demonstrating its freshness with the unusual choice of opening band: opening the show will be Toothless Unicorns, a very young power trio formed last year by Edgar Pirina (guitar and vocals, 13 years old) and Gabriel Pirina and Saul Corda (bass and drums, both 9 years old), a group that already boasts a victory at the Monte Claro Music Contest and participation in festivals such as Beach Day Out and Rock in Contea. Immediately after, it will be the turn of the veterans of the island's emo scene, Quercia, a band hailing from Iglesias who, after debuting in 2016 with the extended play "Non è vero che non ho più l'età," quickly gained acclaim on the peninsula, shedding light on a rich provincial emo scene. The next group to perform, the Packers, took shape in 2022 as a hybrid of post-hardcore roots and overseas R&B and hip-hop influences—which their debut "Summer Nights Secret" (2024) is fully imbued with—and played at the Manchester Punk Rock Fest last April. The last band on the bill hails directly from Sassari: Vilma, also veterans of Sardinian emo (active since 2014) and linked to the iconic Italian label of the genre To Lose La Track, with whom they released their latest album, "Fortuna," which, referencing the legendary Fine Before You Came, is a new explosive concentration of screams, guitar riffs, and sonic violence. Closing out the concerts is another local star: Inuza, founder of the Obl/que crew and one of the main minds behind the revival of drum'n'bass on the island, since 2022 has combined DJing with production, releasing Samsara Beats.
