The President of the Chamber, Roberto Fico, called the Parliament in joint session, with the participation of the regional delegates, on Monday 24 January, at 3 pm, to elect the President of the Republic.

The convocation notice, announced the press office of the Chamber, will be published in the Official Gazette today.

THE PROCEDURE - The procedure for electing the President of the Republic is established by the Constitution, in articles 83, 84 and 85. It provides that thirty days before the term of the head of state expires - that of Sergio Mattarella expires on 3 February, the day on which he was sworn in as President - the President of the Chamber convenes "in joint session the Parliament and the regional delegates, to elect the new President of the Republic".

THE VOTE - There will be 1,008 or 1,009 electors gathered in joint session: 321 senators, 630 deputies and 58 regional delegates, three for each Region, with the exception of Valle d'Aosta which has one, designated so that representation is ensured of minorities.

The plenum is actually currently stopped at 1,007 members, with 320 senators waiting for the Senate Chamber to validate the replacement of the Senator of the Pd Fabio Porta to that of Maie Adriano Cario, declared forfeited, and with 629 deputies being vacant the seat vacated by the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, but with the by-elections already called for Sunday 16 January.
