Quartu becomes part of the nascent national network of Romanesque in Italy , through the collaboration agreement between the "Sardegna Isola del Romanico" Foundation - of which the city is a part - and the "Lemine" Foundation of Bergamo . Sardinia and Lombardy will be united by an operational agreement aimed at enhancing their enormous historical and architectural heritage from the Romanesque era.

The agreement was signed in Bergamo by Antonello Figus and Giambattista Brioschi, the presidents of the two foundations. Also present were several mayors and delegations from the Sardinian Municipalities adhering to the Romanesque network, including that of the Municipality of Quartu Sant'Elena which has several examples of the Romanesque period in its territory.

The meeting made it possible to take stock of the process that will soon lead to the establishment of the European Group of Territorial Cooperation "Small Communities with Great Cultural Heritage", which provides for a partnership between the Lombard Association of small municipalities, the Sardinia Island of Romanesque and the Small Municipalities Association of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

«The idea is to develop complementary projects and set common objectives in order to promote Sardinian Romanesque in Lombardy, and in the future also in Europe», explained Annamaria Demurtas, municipal councilor of the Rinascita group and delegate for the Municipality of Quartu . "The municipality - he continues - can rightfully aspire to the role of local leader in the Romanesque area, since there are 6 Romanesque religious sites in our area : the churches of Santa Maria di Cepola, San Pietro di Ponte, San Benedetto , Buoncammino, San Forzorio and Sant'Agata”.

The adhesion to the Sardegna Isola del Romanico Foundation of the Quartese municipality arrived in the month of July, with the green light of the Council. The ultimate goal is to build a strategy for enhancing the citizens' cultural assets that can support the development of excellent tourist, work and cultural opportunities, with a view to synergy with other territories on and off the island.

On the calendar there are various interventions to strengthen and develop the territory, to strengthen its attractiveness, to consolidate identity values and sustainable local development.

« The churches built in Romanesque style between the middle of the 11th and the beginning of the 14th century represent an important part of the historical monumental heritage of Sardinia , and Quartu can boast, unique on the island, a multiplicity of sites that are now just waiting to be known» , concludes Demurtas.
