Despite its recognition by the European Parliament a year ago, the insularity principle has so far not received full implementation by the EU.

"It is necessary to extend to Sardinia the derogations provided for by article 349 of the Treaty on the functioning of the European Union, the one which concerns the outermost islands, carrying forward the necessary changes to the Community legislation on transport", explains the president of the Transport commission of the Chamber Salvatore Deidda.

The goal is to obtain less rigid rules on state aids and, in cascade, a fairer and more efficient model for territorial continuity.

On 6 September, the Region will present itself in Brussels with a dossier containing all the limits of the current system of connections: the tariff policy left in the hands of the airlines, insufficient frequencies, the horizon limited to the airports of Fiumicino and Linate only. On top of the Council's requests there will be a single tariff for residents and tourists, the only mechanism that can guarantee the development of the island.

The new system of aerial territorial continuity is destined to enter into force - barring surprises - in October 2024.

The other model, that of Corsica, has already received the green light from the EU Commission.
