What fans feared has turned out to be the truth. Paul Auster's social profiles had stopped for some time, now the writer's wife has confirmed that her husband has cancer.

"I've been away from Instagram for a while – writes Siri Hustvedt -. The reason is that my husband was diagnosed with cancer in December, after he had been ill for several months", Auster is being treated at Sloan Kettering in New York, one of the most important centers in the US for the fight against cancer.

"I have entered a land called Cancerland, which many of you have known," added the woman who married the author in 1982. "Some people live and some die. Everyone knows it, yet living that truth from close changes everyday reality. Intimacy with another person is not just a parallel experience, two lines moving in the same direction, but do not intersect. It is much more like a dynamic Venn diagram: the overlapping parts of two circles move and change over time. An 'I' and a 'you' in motion which is also 'we'”.

Paul Auster, author of the many books of the New York Trilogy, is 76 years old: the disease struck him while he was still metabolizing the mourning for the death by overdose of his son Daniel immediately after that of his granddaughter Ruby .
