The data from ASL 5 are alarming, to say the least. "In the province of Oristano, 74 new cases of type 1 diabetes are diagnosed every year for every 100,000 inhabitants aged between 0 and 14, while in the rest of Italy the average is 6 new cases per year for every 100,000 inhabitants in the same age group," said Enrica Paderi, director of the Pediatrics Operating Unit at San Martino Hospital.

A real emergency, which therefore requires adequate tools also in the school world . And precisely to guarantee the inclusion and psychophysical well-being of students with type 1 diabetes, the memorandum of understanding between the ASL and the Provincial School Office was updated, signed at the end of May by the commissioner of the ASL 5, Federico Argiolas, and by the director of the Provincial Territorial Area (ATP), Fabrizio Floris. An agreement, operational starting from the next school year, thanks to which school staff will be trained by the pediatric diabetologists of the Health Authority on the procedures to be implemented for the correct inclusion of students with type 1 diabetes.

"Faced with such a high incidence , a strong and clear response from the school was needed to students with type 1 diabetes and their families ," said Fabrizio Floris. "Thanks to the protocol, it will be possible to offer reception and support in the school environment to young students with type 1 diabetes and their families." The contact person for the ATP's Inclusion and Personal Support Office, Florinda Meli, adds: "The next step will be to share the protocol with the schools and implement the training plan."
