Science leaves the lab and meets the city. In Nuoro, the European Researchers' Night 2026, part of the European Sharpwr project, is preparing to transform squares, schools, libraries, and educational spaces into meeting places for research, technology, and innovation. The main event will be tomorrow, but the program will extend well beyond a single day, with initiatives continuing until October 3rd. This is a deliberate decision by the city administration, which, through the Department of European Programming and the Europe Direct Nuoro center, has chosen to create a widespread festival, designed primarily to engage young people, schools, families, and associations.

The goal is to bring research into the heart of the community, avoiding concentrating all activities in a single space. "It's not the public that should move to a 'research citadel'," explains Mariangela Crabolu, Councilor for European Programming, "but research itself that becomes a community, meeting citizens in their everyday places and positively influencing the entire urban fabric of Nuoro." And at the center of the stage: Among the main themes of this edition will be the Einstein Telescope, the major international project for the study of gravitational waves, with the candidacy of the SOS Enattos site in Sardinia.

The project will be presented through events dedicated to schools and the public. These include "Einstein Telescope in the Classroom" and the debate "From Copernicus to the Einstein Telescope," designed to explain not only the scientific significance of the infrastructure, but also its potential implications for technology, education, and employment. For Nuoro, this is also an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the local community and one of the great challenges of contemporary research, directly involving students. The aim is to introduce younger generations to research and scientific professions, demonstrating how an international project can have concrete impacts at the local level as well. Festivals and Schools The program has been designed with a particular focus on schools. Local schools, including the Volta-Brau and the city's comprehensive schools, will be involved with workshops, interactive experiences, and technology exhibits. The extended duration of the event will allow schools to participate in the activities more flexibly, transforming Researchers' Night into a journey of knowledge that extends beyond a single day. But the program is not just for students. The initiatives are also designed for families and all citizens interested in learning more about the world of research. Gravitational Waves and Virtual Reality The calendar offers a journey through different fields of science and innovation. It begins with physics and space, with in-depth studies on light spectra and gravitational waves, and continues with immersive technologies, with virtual reality experiences dedicated to speleology and territorial exploration through the "Visioni karsiche" project. There will also be space for technological demonstrations and the relationship between artificial intelligence, innovation, and the protection of natural heritage, demonstrating how scientific tools and knowledge can be applied to understanding and enhancing the territory. "A bridge between Nuoro and Europe" For Councilor Crabolu, the event also represents an opportunity to strengthen the city's ties with the opportunities offered by the European dimension. "The European Researchers' Night represents a strategic moment of connection between our community and Europe," she emphasizes. "Through the opportunities offered by EU programming and the work of Europe Direct, we demonstrate that Nuoro is capable of meeting the challenges of innovation." For Nuoro, European Researchers' Night 2026 thus becomes not just an event for scientific dissemination, but an opportunity to connect schools, research, innovation, the local community, and Europe, with a focus on the generations who will be called upon to build the island's future.
